“

There are many wonderful things about the Center; the friendly staff and volunteers, the helpful advice, and the interesting activities. But what I appreciate most is the Chinese classes with Gloria. It is great to be able to take classes with other expats.
These classes cover the lessons more slowly, allowing me time to absorb more of the Chinese characters and pronunciation. Gloria is always willing to repeat something more than once. Many times I need to do an exercise in Chinese contextual grammar three or for times before I understand i!. And I really appreciate all of the friends that I have made in my Chinese classes. I would highly recommend taking a Chinese class at the Center. Your ability to speak and understand Chinese will improve, and you will meet many interesting people in the class!”

“

I am really unhappy about this, but we will not be returning to Taiwan due to a change in my husband’s employment.

Upon arriving in Taipei for the first time, along with two other couples from the US, the other two ladies and I immediately set out to find the Center, which we had read about and heard about prior to our arrival in Taiwan. We knew no one else in Taiwan. We had no idea what to expect, but being strangers in a strange land we were reaching out for help to find our way around. The Center came as quite a surprise – instead of an impersonal, hand-out-the-brochures organization, we found a truly interactive, super-helpful second home, with a staff that would make any organization proud.

The coffees, tours, classes, volunteer opportunities, and just plain friendliness of the Center was like an oasis – helping us find our way and guiding us to true enjoyment of our Taiwan experience.
Everyone on the staff, and all volunteers and instructors, were fantastic – and I don’t use that term lightly. Your brochures, magazines and internet site are immensely helpful. I would not trade away one minute that I spent at the Center or at a Center activity. Knowledge, fun and laughter are some of the many benefits derived from a visit to the Center. Keep up the good work. The Center is a vital resource for newcomers to Taiwan, as well as for those fortunate enough to be around for a while.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you once again. I hope to return to Taiwan again someday, perhaps as a tourist. The first thing I will do is to visit the Center.”

FAQs

General Info

It depends on the activity and on available seating. Many of the Center’s activities are designed for adults, but we do offer family-friendly activities from time to time (e.g. clothes swap, breastfeeding meetup, dumpling party). If you ever need to bring your child to a Center activity and are not sure if appropriate, please contact us and ask ahead.

Yes, all Center activities are conducted in English. For tours and events held outside the Center (e.g. market tours, history tours, outdoor sports), activity leaders are at least English-proficient to assist guests, and also Mandarin-speaking or Mandarin-proficient to interact with local partners.

It depends on the activity and on available seating. Accessibility for outdoor activities are dictated by the nature of the activity or setting (e.g. hiking trail, public park, or city urban infrastructure). The Center’s event space in Tianmu has elevator access but limited wheelchair access. Certain culinary events may use ingredients containing soy, gluten, nuts, sesame, or other allergens, and allergy information will be posted in each activity description.

Certain Center activities (e.g. outdoor sports, city tours) have additional insurance requirements by the Center or our tour partner. For those activities, the Center typically requests a registrant’s 1) legal name; photocopy of government identification (e.g. passport, ARC, Taiwan National ID); 3) government identification number; 4) birth date; and 5) emergency contact name and phone number. Your personal identification information will only be accessible and stored by the Center and contracted tour partners, and all personal data are governed by Taiwan’s privacy laws.

Registration & Accounts

A Center website account is not required, but highly encouraged! While you can simply complete a registration using our Guest Transaction mode, there are many benefits to activating a Center website account. You can save your personal contact information and payment methods, find proof of registration, get access to coupons and credits, and browse your past Center activities. Sign up for a Center account today!

Settings for multiple registrations differ from event to event. If you do not see an option in your Center online shopping cart for registering and paying for multiple persons in your party, then log out of your Center account. Then, you can complete a purchase separately for each individual person in your party using the Guest Transaction mode.

Yes, please do register if you are able. Registering in advance helps us better prepare for the number of participants. For example, while we welcome walk-in’s for specific events, certain venues have strictly limited seating, or activity leaders may only prepare limited materials.

Payments & Fees

The Center’s online shopping cart accepts major credit cards (please note that a foreign transaction fee may be charged if you use a non-Taiwan credit card), as well as options for bank transfers using Taiwan bank accounts (you will need your Taiwan bank code, branch code, and account number). Cash payments or cash donations are only accepted at specific events; please check each activity description for details.
