This piece looks at the idea of how body image determines the value of an individual. Losing weight is difficult and requires dedication and determination. What if there is wearable jewellery that helps you lose weight instantly? From one aspect, this piece proposes an ideal that doesn’t exist where fat can be ‘sharpened away’. And from another aspect, it visualises the absurdity of how body image concerns could potentially lead to neuroses.
Although these expectations are imposed on us unwillingly – as symbolised in the sometimes uncomfortable wearing of my jewellery – we can at least determine ourselves how we want others to perceive and value us, to be truly ourselves and free from these sometimes absurd societal constructs.
