Dr. Hui-Shiang tries to gain a more complete picture of the client’s internal world throughout the client’s description of symptoms and the exploration of upbringing. She also pays attention on spiritual, cultural and family factors. She values more on finding client’s core issue and facilitating deep change than symptom releasing or strategies developing in her work. Throughout the past 20 years of practice and teaching, Hui-Shiang is compassionate to work with people who suffered from any kinds of internal conflicts (emotional disturbance, panic attack, depression, addictions, trauma, loss and grief, existential searching) and interpersonal conflicts (family of origin, intimacy, affair, communication difficulties, and boundary issues).

Therapeutic Approach

Dr. Hui-Shiang applies mainly Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Family System approaches. She believes that family is the first and main interpersonal environment for individuals to form their personality and behaviors. Exploring how family plays a role in a client’s life individually and interpersonally and understanding the client’s internal contradicted parts are essential to resolve their current or recurrent problems. Hui-Shiang applied varied techniques from contemporary theories to reach this goal; meanwhile, she respects clients’ counseling goals and how far they want to change.

Dr. Hui-Shiang views the counseling process as a puzzle—an ongoing journey of uncovering important pieces of one’s personal experiences, completed together by the client and the counselor. The key to gaining the most from counseling lies in the client’s readiness to face and explore their inner world.
